The heart of my art practice is to “walk” my raw canvas across the landscape; letting soil, plants, detritus, and topography mark the fabric. It is important for me that my paintings are in direct contact with the land and place that inspires the work. Back in the studio, I stretch the canvas and then use additional soil, gathered from where I had "walked" the canvas, as paint pigment. My practice is purposefully slow and meditative. I use direct observation, journaling, photo collage, soil collection, and photographic documentation to investigate nature, wild spaces, and our human relationship to place.
Each painting carries a GPS coordinate because I view the work as a collaboration between me and the land. The overlaid geometries are an artifact born from my training as a product and architectural designer. I channel this design history and experience into my painting practice by exploring lines, bands, and grids. I am interested in the juxtaposition between the organic and the human-made. My work has terroir because each piece is influenced by changes in soil, geology, terrain, climate, and time. I am exploring our relationship to the earth and question how we can evolve our impulse to dominate it. In some of my soil paintings I add 24K gold leaf like in the Japanese tradition of Kintsugi (golden joinery). As a philosophy, Kintsugi regards breakage and repair as a precious part of an object's story instead of something to hide or disguise. My Japanese heritage deeply informs both my art practice and design work.
